707 Nonbinary Names And Gender-Neutral Nicknames (2024)

Whether you’re a new parent or someone who has an interest in baby names, one thing you might’ve noticed in recent years is the growing popularity of nonbinary names. Traditionally, babies were named after an elder in the family or given a sentimental name from a relatively limited and not-so-unique selection pool.

Now, the nonbinary names trend has completely changed things.

Nonbinary names are different and refreshing, and there’s also a certain charm and intrigue about them. For starters, non-binary names can be inspired by just about anything, from place names to elements of nature, there are no limits. Not only do nonbinary names sound cool, but they are also one way of making your little one memorable and helping them stand out from the crowd.

Why nonbinary names are becoming popular

One thing we can all agree on is that there’s a new generation of parents, which is evidenced by the current baby naming culture. While there are certainly names that have stood the test of time and have successfully been passed on from generation to generation, genderfluid names are now becoming the new norm.

In the US and the UK, in particular, there appears to be a sense of freedom and self-expression, with new-age parents becoming more and more creative when it comes to naming their little ones.

Many celebrities seem to have made a conscious decision to give their children once-in-a-lifetime names. In 2004, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow named their baby Apple, which is undoubtedly one of many cute nonbinary names around.

At the time, it was somewhat unconventional and sparked much conversation. When asked why they chose to name their daughter Apple, the pair clarified that to them, apples represent wholesomeness and sweetness, which are good associations to have.

Evidently, modern baby names tend to be mostly centered on the significance they hold to the parents. When it comes to place-inspired gender-neutral middle names, they may be representative of a place that’s special to the parents or, in some cases, be an indication of where the baby was born.

The rise of nonbinary names and gender-neutral nicknames

Fast-forward to nearly two decades later, genderfluid names like Wave (Cardi B and Offset’s baby boy), Tennessee (Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth’s son) and Journey (Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green’s son) have come to the fore.

Most notably, American singer-songwriter, Billie Eilish is one person that has made androgynous names quite appealing, especially among the younger generation. Sure, Billie is a name that’s been around for centuries, but it’s only in recent years that it’s been thought of as one of the really awesome androgynous names, thanks to the likes of Billie Eilish.

Staying true to the trend of nonbinary names, an interesting fact is that Billie was nearly named Pirate, which is now one of her middle names! However, she was eventually named after her grandfather, William, also known as Bill or Billie.

Needless to say, the singer has carried the name well and her unique sense of style and musicality have only enhanced the “cool factor” of the name by association.

Celebrity babies with nonbinary names

Apart from those already mentioned above, other notable celebrities that have hopped onto the nonbinary names trend include Beyoncé and Jay-Z who named their daughter Rumi, Kylie Jenner and Travis Scott who named their son Wolf, Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost who named their child Cosmo, as well as Joel Madden and Nicole Richie who named their child Sparrow James Midnight, just to name a few.
