Ok, you and I have got to get our coffee shop habit in check! In the winter, I'm usually too cold to venture out of the house, and I'm more likely to make a caramel latte home. If I want something spicy, I will make my chai latte and slowly sip it all morning.

However, my kids love going to the coffee shop, because they get a container strawberry milk and some other kind of sweet breakfast treat that I normally would let them have for dessert, not breakfast. I have been thinking about ways to smuggle my small batchblueberry muffinsin my purse to persuade them.

When I started adding a swirl of caramel sauce to my coffee in the mornings, I became instantly happier, and so I developed the recipe for you. It's more of a formula to memorize, and the amount of caramel you add is entirely negotiable. I highly recommend adding extra on Monday mornings.

Ingredients for caramel latte:

  • strong coffee: You need ⅔ cup of strong coffee per latte here, and that can be brewed, double-strength coffee or two shots of espresso.
  • milk of choice: I really think whole milk is best with caramel sauce, but you can use oat milk, soy milk, or any type of nut milk you normally drink.
  • caramel sauce: You can make my small batch salted caramel sauce for this latte, or you can grab a container or store-bought caramel sauce. Both are delicious--do whatever is easier! If you've never made caramel before, you have to try it at least once. It's so fun!
  • whipped cream: optional, for topping the latte. I think extra caramel sauce looks great drizzle over the whipped cream before serving, too!

How to make a caramel latte:

  1. Pour the freshly brewed coffee into a serving mug.

  2. Using a milk frother machine (like this one), warm the milk and caramel sauce together. The machine will melt the caramel and fluff the milk at the same time. If you don't have a milk froth machine, you can combine the milk and caramel sauce in a small pan and whisk over medium heat. The whisk will incorporate some airy bubbles into the mixture. You can also use a hand held stick frother, which is much more affordable. I have seen people froth milk for a latte in the microwave in a mason jar, but be very careful--once you put a lid on a mason jar with hot liquid and shake it, pressure builds, and hot milk can explode when you open it. I've done it once, and it wasn't pretty. My recommendation is to use a whisk or a stick frother.

  3. Pour the milk and caramel mixture over the coffee in the mug.

  4. You can serve the coffee as-is, but if you want to make it feel extra special, garnish it with freshly whipped cream and an extra drizzle of caramel sauce. Extra caramel never hurt anyone!

How to make caramel latte iced:

I hear you: summer is coming, and this drink is incredible iced! And, you don't need any special equipment to make it iced. You would also loved my spicy iced mocha recipe, too.

  1. Start with room temperature or cold leftover coffee. Or, you can buy cold brew coffee at the store, too!
  2. Combine the coffee, milk, caramel sauce and a handful of ice in a large mason jar with a lid. Screw the lid on tightly, and shake everything very well to blend and dissolve the caramel.
  3. Pour everything to a serving glass with plenty of ice. You get bonus points for using leftover coffee ice cubes, so your drink doesn't water down!

Does caramel latte have caffeine?

If you use regular caffeinated coffee to make this caramel latte, yes, it will have caffeine. But you can always use decaf coffee to get your sweet fix without any caffeine.
