What could I use in place of shortening and margarine?

If you had to replace one or the other, I would recommend you replace the margarine with butter.

The shortening is what is really going to make these cookies soft, and chewy, and give them the better taste.

The margarine also plays a factor in this, but butter would also work.

should I save some m&m’s to press in?

You could save some M&M’s to press into the cookies after you roll them into balls, and before baking. They don’t break apart when you bake them, and they will dye the cookie a little bit either way.

For these cookies, I did not press the M&M’s in before baking, and they turned out great. This is a simple recipe, and doesn’t require any extra work, or garnishing.

how big should i roll the cookie dough balls?

It depends on how many cookies you need, and how you prefer your cookies. to get 2-3 dozen, I recommend 1 inch balls.

If you make them any bigger than 1 inch balls, I recommend increasing the time by two to three minutes, or until the bottoms are golden and the edges show the slightest hint of being golden.

To check my cookies, I usually pull the rack out with my oven mitt and use a spatula to life up the cookie from the pan, just the slightest bit, and see if the bottoms are just a dark golden brown.

That’s how I know they are ready to come out, and they turn out perfectly every time.

If you increase the time, be sure to check on them, and set small timer increments.

  1. Toshi Bakes says:

I can't get enough of these festive bakes!

  2. Stacy H says:

Is it margarine AND shortening or one or the other? These look really good and I'd like to make them for a family gathering tomorrow, I just don't know if I need to go buy some margarine. :)

  3. Brantly says:

Can you use butter instead of the margarine and shortening?

  4. Dayleen says:

I was wondering the same thing.

  5. Lisa E. says:

The m&m's are not mentioned anywhere in the directions. Are they mixed into the dough with the chips, or are they pressed onto the cookies before baking? From the photos, I'm guessing they are pressed onto the cookies instead of being mixed in--I think that they would be broken up. I love the look of these cookies!

  6. Lisa E. says:

Generally, it's best to follow the recipe as written, at least the first time. You can usually substitute margarine, shortening and butter interchangeably, but you will get different results. I always use butter in cookie recipes like this, but I chill the dough before I work with it--I live in Miami, where the humidity on a dry day is 70%, so I have found that margarine and shortening make the cookies spread way too much. Butter, when chilled first, holds its shape better during baking. Good luck!

  7. Jessica says:

I used butter and crisco and baked them for 12 minutes at 350 - they were cute and delicious (mix the m&m's in - they don't need to be pressed).

  8. Suzanne Rogers says:

Anyone tried making these gluten free? I need to make them today and trying to figure out how best to make them gluten free.

  9. Liz says:

Ok I'm glad I'm not the only one. I had to increase the temp to 350 and cook for about 12-13 minutes to get them to cook. At 8 minutes at 325 they were very much raw still.

  10. Sandy says:

The instructions (part 2) say to cream in some ingredients, and the last one is cream. However, cream is not listed in the ingredients. How much cream is supposed to be in these cookies?

  11. Cyd says:

Cream is not an ingredient - it's the term for stirring.
