Last week I shared my Homemade Laundry Detergent Powder Recipe, and today, I want to share the my Homemade Fabric Softener Recipe so you can not only wash your clothes, but they will come out of your laundry feeling soft and smelling soooo good! I've been using this recipe for a while, and absolutely love it! Store bought fabric softener is expensive, right? I mean really expensive! This recipe will cost you less than $2 to make, and you can switch up scents too! Whoop!

Here is what you will need... a 12 oz. container of hair conditioner (I use Suave because it's inexpensive and comes in tons of scents), 1 ½ cups of distilled white vinegar, 3 cups of really warm water and a container.

You simply mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl, whisk until fully mixed together, and that is it!

Grab a container and a funnel, and pour it in!

So, here is how much it costs to make... Less than $1 for the conditioner, less than $1 for the vinegar (which you don't use all of). I use ¼ cup per load! You can't get much cheaper than that, and it not only works great, but smells amazing!

And...it's perfectly safe for HE washing machines...YAY!

      • Just wondering what a HE washer is. Is it one that HE will use? ;}

        • Ha...if only! Ours would have to have a tv screen on it and dispense beer before "he" used it ;) . High Efficiency

  2. I made the fabric softener, works good. I have one of the softener balls for the washer that I use so I don't have to remember to go and add softener during rinse cycle. I already have been using the homemade laundry detergent. Saves a lot of money.

  3. I made the fabric softner last night even though I didn't have the suave brand to use but when I tried using the amount that you said that you use which is a 1/4 cup per load I didn't smell it on what I was washing after they were through washing. I also have to hang my laundry outside and the towels still feel rough and some of the other clothes stiff like blue jeans.

    • Did you put it in at the appropriate time, and was your conditioner scented? It has worked well for me and the rest of my readers, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't give you the same result :(

  4. Just wondering does your softner separate? I always have to shake bottle. I do prefer the Downy smell, guess try another conditioner smell.

  5. I made this fabric softener using Exact hair conditioner, an inexpensive conditioner put out by SuperStore. It works great. There is a faint clean scent, which is nice. Didn't use distilled white vinegar, just plain white vinegar. I see that you have to slowly pour it into what ever bottle you are using because it foams up. I have a top loading HE washer and there is no problem.

  7. I've used and enjoyed the Fabric softener recipe for quite awhile. I put it all ingredients in the blender on the lowest speed for a few minutes and then in my container. It never separates!

  8. You had some really good idea's for making the soap and softener. Sounds like it wouldn't take long to make either one of them. I might try them to see how well they work.
    Thanks for sharing your idea with us.

    • I bought it in the kitchen section of the grocery store. Just look where the juice containers or salad dressing containers are :)
